A Word From the Blogger Redux

So It Happens hasn’t happened for a while—if the span of half a dozen years counts as a “while.” Time enough for a child to go from birth to first grade, anyway.

That’s the first-grader’s whole life; it’s just a bit over a tenth of mine. That little span had not been so eventful. I did have an edifying close encounter with Mr. Death: relatively minor surgery induced septic shock the next morning, so instead of going home I went into intensive care. In any event, as you can tell, I didn’t die.

Two years ago, a short, but carefully researched, book of mine, Śrīla Prabhupāda: The Founder-Ācārya of ISKCON, was published by the GBC Press and endorsed as “A GBC Foundational Document.”

Encouraged by such results, and wanting to take advantage of what Śrīla Prabhupāda called “the fag end of life,” I was able to resign from all management and mismanagement responsibilities in ISKCON.

Following that, my living conditions had become somewhat unsettled and unsettling, but now they seem to be getting settled up. And so I can finally turn to writing, hoping to follow in the footsteps of Śrīla Prabhupāda, who wrote in a letter to Kīrtika dāsi on February 16, 1972:

I am always very much encouraged to hear from my disciples and to reply them, but now I am old man and I have inclination for philosophy and translating, and if all day and night I am reading and answering and signing letters then I cannot utilize this, the fag-end of my life, to give you so many nice literatures like the Vedas, Upanisads, Puranas, Ramayana, Mahabharata, and other books in our own Gaudiya line, like Rupa Goswami, Sanatana Goswami, Visvanatha Cakravarti and others. So if the GBC which I have appointed for this task will kindly now assist me in this way, by handling very expertly and with all good consideration all matters of managing, I shall devote my full time to giving you further nice books.

(For more reflections by Śrīla Prabhupāda on “the fag end of life” see the purports to Śrīmad Bhāgavatam 3.28.5 and 4.28.3.)

obeisances, and all glories to Srila Prabhupada,
as we are all not growing younger, sooner or later we will have to go through similar situations,

After you gave us your well researched seminar on the history of ISKCON, there was not much left, to stay with us, but you always decided for us, and for the mission of Srila Prabhupada in general, despite of all obstacles, we will not forget, and if it is your desire to dive into books and writings, we will respect your choice and make efforts of assisting and releaving you of unnecessary responsibilities. I am shure others can see that as well, so thank you again for your valuable time you spend with us. y.s. H. dasa
